Where should carbon monoxide alarms NOT be installed?

It is not a good idea to install carbon monoxide alarms in or near kitchens, bathrooms, garages or unheated areas of your home where moisture, frost, cooking vapors, dust, or vehicle exhaust fumes might cause the alarm to sound false alarms. They should not be placed in areas of a home or building prone to temperature extremes. They should not be located above or beside fuel-burning appliances which invariably emit trace amounts of carbon monoxide upon start-up. They should be placed away from ceiling fans, heating and air conditioner (HVAC) vents, HVAC fresh air return vents and open windows, all of which create turbulent air that might prevent carbon monoxide from reaching the alarm’s sensors.
