Operations Division

Lt. Jason Hays
Jason Hays, Lieutenant

The La Grande Police Department Operations Division, commanded by a Lieutenant has the responsibility for the delivery of police services within our community. The Operations Division is staffed with 1 Lieutenant, 4 Patrol Sergeants, 10 Patrol Officers, 1 Detective Sergeant, 2 Detectives, and 1 Code Enforcement Officer.

The Operations Division consists of three sections.  These sections are:

  • Patrol
  • Investigations
  • Code / Parking Enforcement

Patrol Section:
The Patrol Section provides primary law enforcement activities to preserve public peace, prevent crime and protect life and property as first responders to calls for service and through proactive community policing activities.   As the most visible section within the department, the uniformed Patrol Section is often the first point of contact for any call for service.  Officers receive numerous hours of training each year to ensure they are able to properly investigate and respond to a variety of incidents.

Our patrol officers are deployed 24 hours per day, 7 days per weeks, on 12 hour shifts; day shift from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and night shift from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.  Each shift is supervised by a sergeant who serves as the Watch Commander.

Investigations Section:
The Investigations Section investigates complex criminal cases that require specialized training, additional investigative time and coordination of resources.  Investigations Section cases can include homicides, child abuse, sexual assaults, physical assaults, robberies, arson, burglaries, major thefts, and many others.

Investigations Section detectives are also members of a number of investigatory teams: the Union County Major Crime Team, the Union County Multi-Disciplinary Child Abuse Team, and the Union County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). These teams are comprised of members from other agencies that come together to investigate incidents, share information, and provide assistance to each other as it relates to their individual missions.

The Investigations Section consists of 1 Detective Sergeant, 1 Criminal Detective, and 1 Special Victims Detective.  The section works closely with surrounding investigative agencies along with staff from the Union County District Attorney's Office, Mount Emily Safe Center, Shelter from the Storm, and Department of Human Services - Child Welfare Division.

Code / Parking Enforcement:
The Code Enforcement Section is staffed by 1 Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) who is supervised by the on-duty Watch Commander.   The CEO works proactively and responds to many calls for service ranging from parking, junked vehicles, tall grass, signs, garbage and other City of La Grande ordinance violations and certain Oregon State laws.

The Code Enforcement Officer works closely with all departments within the City. Through education and enforcement the CEO works to preserve and improve the quality of life and public safety for all who work, live in and visit our community.
