Max Square Renovation Improvements

On May 18, 2015, the City of La Grande began an extensive renovation of the downtown with the Adams Avenue Streetscape Project which consisted of replacing concrete sidewalks, installation of street pedestrian lighting, installation of trees and necessary irrigation lines, and decorative concrete.  As a part of this project, the City needed to address safety concerns that existed in Max Square with the deteriorating inscribed bricks which had already resulted in citizens receiving injuries as a result of the damaged brick locations.  The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission reviewed the various alternatives of replacing the bricks and determined the best solution was to replace the bricks with textured concrete and to post on a plaque the names of those contributors who had purchased bricks.  The plaque has been attached to the wall next to the stage in Max Square.  The bricks have been removed and the textured concrete has been poured, eliminating the unsafe condition.

As a result of the removal of the bricks, 568 monogrammed bricks have been salvaged and are stored at the La Grande Public Works Department.  A list of the names inscribed on those bricks has been established and is posted on the City's web site.  If you would like to check if yours or a relative's brick has been salvaged, you may do so here, or you may contact the Public Works Department at 541-962-1325.  If your brick is one of those that could not be salvaged, we sincerely apologize.  We regret we were not able to save all the bricks.  If you or someone you know purchased a brick, please check the donor wall and if the name doesn't appear on the wall, please contact the City of La Grande Parks Department at 541-962-1325 ext. 203, so that we can add those names to the wall.
