3rd Annual Future Stewards Day Held March 10, 2011
The 3rd Annual Future Stewards Day was held on March 10, 2011 at the Riveria School gym. The event was organized by Debbie Cornford and Jessica Lindley of the Public Works Department. Topics covered this year were water conservation techniques and facts, the affects of bad air quality and how to understand the air quality index, different ways air quality is damaged, how pollution effects animals and a lesson on the circle of life. Lunch was also served to the children and teachers with the help of volunteers. A majority of the event is funded by an Oregon Department of Environmental Quality grant. Because of the grant the City is not only able to hold Future Stewards Day but also provide a gift bag to each student that provides additional information on the topics covered.
In addition to the classes, a calendar contest is held each year. The children are asked to draw a picture of what they learned that day. The pictures are gathered and displayed at the City of La Grande Public Works Department and are judge by the employees. The top 14 pictures are chosen to be in the calendar. Each winning student receives a prize bag along with a calendar and each teacher receives a calendar as well.
The City would like to send a special thank you to all of the presenters this year. This program would not be possible without the following peoples help: Doug Harsin (City of La Grande), Meriel Doyle (Boise State University Student), Solo Greene (Nez Perce Tribe), Sara Fenn (City Garbage Service) and Liegh Collins (Grande Ronde Model Watershed).
