Background and Purpose

The La Grande Arts Commission was created by Ordinance of the La Grande City Council on February 19, 1986.  The purpose of the Commission is to encourage greater opportunitiies for and recognition of the arts in the La Grande area; provide coordination of events to showcase the abilities of area artists; provide development and promotion of the arts as a factor in the economic life of the community; pursue funding sources, projects and programs, including opportunities for children; and provide liaison and representation to the Eastern Oregon Regional Arts Council. No financial support is received from the City; funding for all projects must be generated by the Commissioners.

The Season's Faire, held the 1st Saturday of November, is the Commission's major fund-raiser each year.   Outstanding regional artists are invited to showcase their work, many of which donate one of their peices to the Commission for auction.  The opening night features an artist reception, the art auction, wine, hors d'oeuvres and delicious desserts.  In addition to the auction, art from over forty participating artists will remain on display in Nightingale Gallery for several weeks and available for purchase.

Arts for All, which provides a 'hands-on' art experience for children, including those with special needs, is held the third weekend in April. This festival is FREE for all children and  gives them the opportunity to express their artistic talents, showcase their achievements and gain exposure to new experiences in the arts.  Children are encouraged to explore on their own, focusing on the process of creation rather than the end result.

The Commission also awards a $500 annual scholarship to a La Grande High School senior planning to pursue a career in the arts and provides other support to artist projects when possible.
